Election Confirms Child Care Continues to be a Priority for Vermonters
The following is a statement from Aly Richards, Board President of Let’s Grow Kids Action Network, on the results of the 2024 election:
“This election confirmed child care continues to be a top issue for Vermonters. Election results show that voters elected 118 Let’s Grow Kids Action Network-endorsed child care candidates from across the political spectrum – Democrats, Republicans, Progressives, and Independents – to congressional, statewide, and legislative offices who are committed to prioritizing child care while in office. With these results, child care champions retain a strong majority in the Vermont House and Senate.
“In the leadup to Election Day, candidates in every corner of the state were talking about child care as both a workforce and economic issue. The message from voters everywhere we went was the same: Vermonters want to build on the progress we’re making and continue to invest in a quality, affordable child care system that strengthens our economy and benefits everyone. In the year since Act 76’s passage, hundreds of child care spaces are being created, early childhood educator compensation is going up, and Vermont families are gaining access to reduced child care costs. Public investment in child care is working.
“At the same time, across the state at election forums and debates, voters shared with candidates that we still need to do more to fully solve the state’s child care crisis. We heard time and again that child care is still out of reach for too many families, and child care programs are still facing staffing challenges that limit their capacity to serve their communities.
“It’s clear that candidates listened and are ready to continue addressing our child care crisis. We offer our congratulations to our newly elected statewide officials and state legislators, and we look forward to working together to continue building a child care system that works for all Vermonters and strengthens our economy.”
